The petition of William Walter of Chichester, Sussex, 8 January 1649

<Sussex:>

To the Right Worshipful Justices of the Peace at the General Quarter Sessions held at Arundel, 8 January 1649.

The humble petition of William Walter, sometime tailor of Chichester until he was maimed while a soldier in Chichester garrison under Captain Knollys.

Shows that the said Captain and his company (wherein your petitioner was an officer) being drawn out of the said garrison into Somerset to besiege a house there called Stowey House, then a garrison held against Parliament, your petitioner in doing service there for Parliament in helping to take that house received a shot into one of his arms, which broke and shattered the bone into pieces. By reason whereof, he is maimed and not only disabled from being a soldier any longer but also from pursuing his trade, by which he could formerly get a competent means to maintain himself, his wife and children. All which, appears by the certificates of his late Captain, Lieutenant, Surgeon and divers inhabitants of Chichester annexed hereto.

Therefore, your humble petitioner beseeches your Worships to be pleased to grant him such a yearly pension during his life out of the stock appointed for maimed soldiers in the three western rapes of this county as you shall think fit. And he and his poor wife and children shall be ever bound to pray for you etc.

4 nobles per annum.
