The certificate for Joseph Smith of Marlborough, Wiltshire, Easter 1662

These are to Certifie That Capt[ain] Joseph Smith was employed in the late Warrs to serve Kings, Lords and Com[m]ons in w[hi]ch Service he receaved many Wounds to his greate expences w[i]th the Losse of his Limbes, And dureing the time of the Warres he was both Serviceable & Civill to many of the Kings friends in protecting them from being plundred, And lately he did appeare in Solliciting for Some that were imprisoned concerning the Busienes of S[i]r George Booth and some of vs obteyned our Liberties through his endeavours, And whereas the said Capt[ain] had none of his Arreares paid though much due to him, hee left the Service and never Served after there was a force put on the Parliam[en]t in Forty Eight, in Secludeing many of their Members as ever wee understoode, Therefore Wee whose names are hereunto Subscribed humble desire he may have those Small pentions continued to him that settled on him for his Subsistance, and any other favours that may be afforded him, hee being a very civill Gentleman as some of vs well knowne and have had experience off.
