The petition of Tristram Handford of Alverdiscott, Devon, Easter 1663

To the Right Wors[shipfu]ll his Ma[jes]t[y’]s Justices of the peace of the County aforesaid assembled at the Castle of Exon.
The humble petic[i]on of Tristram Handford of the p[ar]ishe of Alv[er]discot.
<Sheweth>
That yo[u]r poore Pet[itioner] was a souldyer in his late Ma[jes]t[y’]s service of blessed memory under the Com[m]aund of Arthur basset Esq[ui]r[e] in the siege against Plimouth and att severall other places where he continued faithfull & loyall in all that siege; where by reason of a long and dangerous sicknes, is now become a very poore Indegent man, having spent all that little he had in the tyme of his said sicknes, insomuch as that by reason of his old decrepit age is not able to relieve himselfe w[i]thout the Charity of well disposed people; wherefore yo[u]r poore pet[itioner] doth humbly implore this hono[ra]ble Bench (he never at any tyme having deserted his Ma[jes]t[y’]s service) that he may be allowed some Comfortable reliefe & subsistence by way of Pension as a maymed souldyer,
And as duty obligeth him he shall ever praye for yo[u]r happiness & prosperity here & hereafter
