The petition of Richard Lewis, residence unknown, 19 June 1648

{To the} right hono[oura]ble the Com[mitte]e of Lords & Com[m]ons for the Army.
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Lewis gent[leman]
Sheweth
That Brinnesley Lewis (yo[u]r petic[i]oner sonne) actually and faithfully served in the Parliam[en]t service from the beginning of theis vnnaturall warrs, first as one of the late Lord Generalls Lifeguard vnder the Comand of S[i]r Phillip Stapleton knight and afterwards as Cornett in Maior Generall Skippons owne Troope of Horse, as well vnder the said late Lord Generall, as also vnder this pr[e]sent Generall the Lord Fairfax vntill about the 10th of July 1645 at Lamport fight the said Brinnesley Lewis received many wounds whereof he immediately dyed. As by his Comission, and by a Certificate vnder the said Maior Generall Skippons hand appeareth.
Now right hono[ura]ble for that yo[u]r petic[i]oner said sonne was very active and faithfull in the p[ar]liam[en]t service and dyeing in the same, and the very hopes and healpes of yo[u]r petic[i]oner (being a very poore man, very aged and having a great charge) yo[u]r petic[i]oner did Administer, As by his l[ette]res of Administracion appeareth.
He therefore humbly prayeth that this hono[oura]ble {Commit}tee would be favourably pleased not onely to give {illegible} for the statem{ent} {o}f {the} sa{id} Brinnesley Lewis {acco}mpts f{o}r the ti{me} that {he} served as Cornet vnder this pr[e]sent Generall vntill his death (it being not aboue Fower moneths) but also to grant him an order to the Thre[asure]rs at Warrs for the receiveing his arreares vpon the same.
