The petition of Mary Burden of Corsham, Wiltshire, Easter 1655

To the Right woorshipfull the Justices of the peace for this County assembled in sessions at the Devises:
The Humble petic[i]on of Mary Burden widdow
Sheweth that yo[u]r petti[t]ion[e]r petitioned his Highnes the Lord p[ro]tector for some releefe for her selfe and smale Children after her husband died in Ireland in the p[ar]liam[en]ts service which pettic[i]on his Highnes takeinge into his tender Considerac[i]on was pleased to refer her to yo[u]r woorshipps for some Competent mayntaynance vpon which yo[u]r woorshipps did allow yo[u]r pet[it]ioner ten pounds a yeare but since the nine & twentith day of September last it hath bin wholy detayned from her although her nessesity is now as greate as before
Now yo[u]r pett[it]io[ne]r humbly prayeth your woorshipps to take her state and Condic[i]on into yo[u]r favourable Considerac[i]on and order her to receaue for time ensueinge either the ten pounds a yeare which you formerly ordered her or soe much as your worshipps in yo[u]r Christian wisdome shall iudge meete
& yo[u]r pett[it]io[ne]r shall pray &c
