The petition of John Head of Easton, Wiltshire, Hilary 1648

To the right wor[shipfu]ll his Ma[jes]t[y’]s Justices of the peace att the generall Sessions holden at new Sarum.
The humble petic[i]on of John Head of Eason in the Countie of Wiltes[hire]:
Humbly Sheweth.
That yo[u]r petic[i]oner serued in the state seruice vnder the com[m]and of his Excellencie Rob[er]t Earle of Essex, in w[hi]ch seruice yo[u]r petic[i]oner did please God to visset w[i]th long and greuious sicknesse to yo[u]r poore petic[i]oners greate losse and hinderance; in soe much that yo[u]r petic[i]oners family is it vnrecourered, w[hi]ch is a greate burden and charge, that w[i]thout yo[u]r charitie be extended towards yo[u]r petic[i]oner his aged wife, and children, they are like to perish.
Now therefore yo[u]r humble petic[i]oner doe make his addresse to yo[u]r wor[shi]pps not doubting but you wil be soe fauo[u]rably pleased as to comisserate his most sadd and deplorable condic[i]on, and afford vnto him an order from this generall sessions that hee may haue such allowance as others haue had in cases of the same nature, as such as you in yo[u]r graue wisdomes shall thincke iust fitt and conuenient:
And yo[u]r petic[i]oner shall euer be bound to pray &c.
