The petition of Elizabeth Dod of London (St Sepulchre Parish), Middlesex, 11 September 1673

To the Right Hon[oura]ble the Lord Mayor of the Citty of London.
The humble Petic[i]on of Elizabeth Dod widdow
Humbly sheweth.
That yo[u]r Pet[itione]rs husband John Dod (was a Scrivener, a freeman of London & served his Apprenticeship with one Mr Edgerton in Fleete=streete) hath beene deceased 18 yeares, in whose liefe tyme was a greate sufferer for his loyalty, since whose decease decease yo[u]r Pet[titione]r liued honestly & Credibly in London, till the late dreadfull fire, by which shee lost all shee had, as by certificate annexed appears, & ever since shee hath liued by her hard labour, but now by reason of her age & weakeness (being 68 yeares of age) shee is noe longer able to subsist but is forced to make her Condic[i]on knowne
Therefore she most humbly prayes that yo[u]r hono[u]r would bee pleased (like the good Samaritan) to take pitty on her distressed & helpless Condic[i]on in this her age weakeness & poverty, & to place her one of the Penc[i]oners at Guild Hall (there being lately one or two voyd) against the next the next [sic.] Quarter day, to preserue her from want & misery.
And yo[u]r poore Pet[itione]r as in duty bound shall ever pray &c.
I desire that the pet[tioner] maie haue her request graunted.
