The petition of Edward Mumford of Dodbrooke, Devon, 11 April 1685

To the hono[oura]ble Bench for the Quarter Sessions for the County aforsaid
The humble Petition of Edward Mumford the eld[e]r of dodbrooke in the said County husbandman
<Sheweth>
That yo[u]r Petic[i]on[e]r in the late vnhappy & vnnaturall warr in his late Ma[jes]ties service King Charles the first of ever blessed Memory beinge then a Foot Souldyer & Corporall vnder the Comand of Captaine Robert Connaway in the Regiment of w[hi]ch the hon[oura]ble S[i]r Edward Seymour Barr[one]t was Collonell received a dangerous wound by a Shott in his left thigh whereby hee was mayhemed and lay a long tyme in a very sadd condic[i]on vnder the Chirurgions hands vpon his owne costs and charges And oftentymes vpon the change of weather his forsaid wound doth soe very much greive & torment him that at tymes hee is altogeither vnable to worke for his Maynteynance havinge not only lost his wife who did much helpe him, but also lately his sight Whereby hee hath spent & consumed all his goods & stocke and yet has Seaverall Children to maynteyne
Therefore yo[u]r Petic[i]on[e]r humbly prayeth that this hono[ura]ble Bench would bee pleased to Comiserate & take into considerac[i]on his sad & deplorable condic[i]on by grantinge him some releife by an yearely penc[i]on as the wisdome of this hono[oura]ble Bench shall thinke fitt
And yo[u]r Pet[itione]r shall ever pray &c.
