The certificate for Major Mathew Scales, royalist officer, 2 July 1660

Wee subscribed doe Certifye whome these may concerne That the bearer hereof Major Mathew Scales, is well knowne vnto vs to haue acted faithfully and valiantly during all ye First and later warrs in England vpon every occasion wherein might appeare anything of action in the least to promote the interest of his late Ma[jes]tie of ever blessed memory, and likewise of his Now Ma[jes]tie the King (vizt.) as he was Lew[tenan]t of a Company of Foote & Adjutant in the Garison of Newark, where he lost all he had there, And he was alsoe in the last seidge in ye said Garrison Capt[ai]n & Adjutant, & At Maidston in Kent he was Major of the Garison there, & of a Regiment Likewise, And in that Garrison he was Wounded Stript and left for dead. Witnes Our hands this second day of July 1660:
