The certificate for Joan Head of Staverton, Devon, 22 May 1648

These are to certify that John Head of o[u]r p[ar]ish of Staverton was a man of good & religious conversation, very hearty in the Parliaments service, a souldier under Major Worth at Stratton & under Capt[ain] Upton at Dartmouth in which service receiving a mortall wound and after a quarter of a yeers miserable languishing under the Chirurgions hands he dyed 3 li. indebted to his Chirurgion (having made an hard shift to pay towards his cure 10 s. himself) for which sum his poore widow Joan Head hath binne often threatned to be arrested.
