The certificate for Edward Humston of Foulk Stapleton, Cheshire, 2 May 1671

To all persons whome this doth or may concerne but especially to his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace at theire Gen[er]all Sessions of ye peace held at Middlewich May ye 2d Anno D[o]m[in]j 1671.

Wee whose names are subscribed doe humbly certify yt Edward Humston of Fulke Stapleford w[i]thin ye Hundred of Broxon in ye County of Chester, hath euer beene a true and loyall Subject to his late Ma[jes]tie of euer blessed memory, and to his Ma[jes]tie yt now is and hath beene a person concern[e]d and engag[e]d in most of ye Fights and Engagem[en]ts in ye late unhappy Warrs beeing first listed under Major Gen[e]rall Egerton at Namptwich Seige after under ye Comand of Prince Rupert at ye raiseing of ye Seige at Newarke upon Trent, and thence to Shrewsberry, and after under ye Comand of my Lord Brandon Gerard who was made Gen[e]rall of South Wales, and there continued upon Service for two yeares and upwards and thence intending for ye releife of Chester then beseiged were mett by ye Parli[a]m[en]t Party at Denbigh and there had a sad and dangerous Fight & thence forc[e]d to retreate into Herefordshire and soe to Tittbury Castle in Staffordshire and there were beseig[e]d and forc[e]d to gett away privately to Ludlow and growing towards ye latter end of ye Warr were there beseiged and were forc[e]d to Surrender upon Condic[i]on, and had a Convay to Drayton in Shropshire and thence Comanded euery one by Pasport to travell to his owne Abode or Home Dureing all w[hi]ch time ye sayd Edward Humston manifested himselfe true Loyall and faythfull in his Ma[jes]ties Service and soe hath continued euer since, and wee know and are assur[e]d that hee hath sustained many sad and greate losses, and thereby is become poore needy and necessitous and a fitt person to bee admitted one of his Ma[jes]ties Pension[e]rs w[i]thin the Hundred of Broxon in the County of Chester, Witnesse our hands this 17th of Aprill An[n]o D[o]m[in]j 1671
