The County Court: the petition of Elizabeth Farmer, widow

Practice reading this petition:

Your petitioner’s late husband was a soldier under Captain John Wright for more than a year and afterwards was a soldier under Captain Selby. He received very little or no pay.

When your petitioner’s late husband was fighting at Trent Bridge he was killed. Your poor petitioner is therefore penniless. She is also pregnant.

Therefore your petitioner’s most humble request is that you would be pleased to take these circumstances into account and allow her some small part of her husband’s pay which is owed to him so that she can live in an honest way.

And your petitioner will pray for you all.
