The County Court: the judges’ score sheet

Your teacher will now give you a copy of the judge’s score sheet which summarises what judges were looking for. The petitioners had to show themselves to be in real need and they had to sound humble and trustworthy. Immediately after the war they also had to show that they fought for Parliament.

You will now hear the petitions of three Civil War survivors! Tick the boxes on the score sheet when you hear the petitioners say the things judges would look for. When you have finished listening to the petitions discuss who you think deserves some money. You only have £12 to give out to the petitioners. This can be given to one petitioner or split between more than one. An ordinary person with a family would need £10 to live off during the Civil War. The closer to this amount you can give someone, the more helpful the pension will be.
