The petition of prisoners in Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, 7 May 1644

To the right Honor[a]ble Collonell Massye Gouernor of the City of Gloster.
The humble peticion of the poore distressed prisoners w[hi]ch were betrayed at Westbury, imprisoned in Bristoll and on Easter munday brought to Barkley Castlell and there remayning
Humbly sheweth.
That whereas your poore p{e}titioners have endured a long tyme of Imprisonment, doe nowe beeseech your honor that you would be pleased to take itt into your tender Concideration our miserable Condition and to be a meanes for our release; we haue heard of our releace a greate whiles agoe but we find itt nothing soe, as for our Alowance we haue bread and Cheese but not one dropp of drinke vnles we pay for itt, & surely for to buy itt, we haue noe mony neyther haue we had any sent vs since we were taken prisoners, therefore we humbly beseech your honor to Comiserate our Condition and releace vs other wise that your honor wil be pleased to send vs som mony to releeue our wants
And your humble peticioners shall euer prays for your honor
