The petition on behalf of Widow Vaughan of Marske in Cleveland, North Riding of Yorkshire, 1685

To the Hono[ura]ble His Ma[jes]ties Justices of ye Peace for the North Riding &c.
May it please yo[u]r Hon[oura]ble Bench,
Whereas a Pention was granted of 40 s. yearly from ye Sessions unto Charles Vaughan, late of Marsk in Cleveland, in consideration of his Services, & Sufferings for King Charles ye Martyr (of glorious memory;) The Payment whereof was thought fit by this Co[u]rt to be continued to his Widow, ever since the Death of ye said Charles Vaughan, till of late it has been omitted, when Old Age, Infirmities, & Indigence have render’d her much more an Object of Charity then She was in ye former years while She enjoy’d ye Benefit. May it therefore please yo[u]r Hon[oura]ble Bench; We whose names are Subscribed, being sensible of ye Truth hereof (All, or most of us having Personally known the s[ai]d C: Vaughan) do earnestly beseech yo[u]r Pious Commiseration in granting & bestowing upon this poor distressed Widow, what Indulgence & Charity that yo[u]r Wisdomes shall be thought meet; either by setling ye like Pension, during ye small remainder of her Life (w[hi]ch would be most acceptable) or at least by a Gratuity, bearing some proportion w[i]th ye Parties Necessity, & y[ou]r Courts Hono[u]r, whereto ‘tis humbly submitted
(May it please yo[u]r Hon[oura]ble Bench)
