The petition on behalf of Thomas Tanner of Fernhurst, Sussex, January 1653

To the Right Worshipfull the Justices of the Peace Sittinge at the Quarter Sessions at Chichester.

The humble petition of the Inhabitants of Farnhurst Sheweth.

That Whereas the bearer hereof Thomas Tanner of Farnhurst aforesaid did out of his voluntarie Affection to the States, list himselfe First vnder Coll[one]ll Morly at Cowdry Garrison, and marched away with Captaine Standelyes to Bazinge house, who beinge slaine there, he was reffered to Captaine Searle, who was also slaine at that Siedge; and the said Thomas Tanner much wounded, but the Siedge beinge then raised, after his Returne and recruite at Arrundell, he marched into the west, with Collonell Drake, where by reason of his wounds not quite whole, he fell sicke and was sent to Poole, vntill he had recouered his Strength, from where returninge backe to Christ Church, he was entertain[e]d vnder Collonell Edwards to goe againe to the Siedge at Bazinge, where he serued vnder Captaine Doue to the takinge of the house, and receiued two Shotts, the one through the hand, and th[e] other through the arme, and other dangerous wounds which doth render him vnable to get his liueinge hauinge no other maintenance but his hands to maintaine him.

In tender Considerac[i]on whereof we yo[u]r said petic[i]oners are emboldened to make our Addresses vnto you in the behalfe of the said Thomas Tanner, who hath beene very labourious since his militarie seruice, to his abilitye to keepe himselfe from Penurie (but being vnable) wee humbly desire that you would be pleased, to allow him a yearely pention, So much as you in your wisdomes shall thinke fitt, for the supplyinge, of his necessities which are greate by reason of his imbecillitie; occasioned by his wounds, in the seruice receiued, and your said Petitioners as in duty bound shall euer pray &c.
