The petition on behalf of Thomas Potter of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire, 15 July 1661
To the right wor[shi]p[fu]ll the Justices of Peace and Quoru[m] at the Quarter Sessions of the Peace houlden at Ormsk[irk]e the fifteenth day of July 1661
The humbly [sic.] petic[i]on of Thomas Downwall, James Tompson, Will[ia]m Ashton, Edmund Winstanley, John Birchall, Will[ia]m Chadwicke, Will[ia]m Hasleden, Constables and Layleyers for the Towne of Ashton in Maberfeild for this pr[e]sent yeare.
Sheweth.
That seuerall great sum[m]es of money haue beene Collected w[i]thin o[u]r said Towne these two last yeares by John Houghton, Will[ia]m Ashton, Thomas Hill, John Potter and Roger Haseleden Constables for the said yeares, whereof (as yet) no p[ar]ticuler accompte [illegible] has been giuen, and that yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]rs are required by ord[e]r to pay Gervis Cloughe fifty shillings for the Cure of one Thomas Potter who was a Sould[ie]r for Ashton aforesaid and wounded in his Ma[jes]tys Service vnd[e]r the Comand of Sir George Booth who vpon a iust accompte of the moneyes receiued by the Constable aforesaid might haue been long since discharged as wee humbly conceiue
Wherefore yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]rs humbly pray the afores[ai]d Constables for the two last yeares may be ord[e]r[e]d to giue in a iust and p[ar]ticuler accompte of all moneyes they haue receiued from the Towne as Constables bef vnto whomsoever yow thinke fitt, and that Edmund Winstanley aforesaid may giue them their Charge, and that the said Gervis Clough his demand may be relegated as yow shall thinke fitt, being a surcharge as we conceiue & yo[u]r petetion[e]rs will euer pray &c
