The petition of William Wright of Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, Michaelmas 1671

To the Right Worsh[ipfu]ll his Maj[es]ties Justice of the of the Peace & Quorum at the gen[er]all Quarter Sessions of the peace held att Manchester in the County of Lanc[aster]:
The humble Petic[i]on of William Wright of Ashton under lyne in the said County
Sheweth
That yo[u]r Petic[i]on[e]r serued his late Majestie Kinge Charles ye first in the warrs against the Vsurpers and continued in his said Majesties service aboue foure yeares and lost one of his leggs which was taken of from his body and since then had but onely the alloweance of Fortie shillings p[er] Annu[m] forth of the pay for the maimed Souldiers till the Charge of the Souldiers should bee smaller and now divers of the maimed souldiers being dead and yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r haueing a great charge of Children is not able to gett his Lyueing by reason of the losse of his Legg but likely to starve for want of mainetenance
Yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r therefore humbly prayes yo[u]r good Worshipps will bee pleased to order him such further alloweance forth of the pay for the Maimed sould[ie]rs as to yo[u]r good worsh[i]pps shall be thought fit according to his great necessity and yo[u]r petic[i]oner shall euer pray &c
