The petition of William Shalcrosse, Derbyshire, 5 April 1648

To the hono[ura]ble Com[m]ittee for the County of Derby

The humble petic[i]on of William Shalcrosse

Sheweth

That yo[u]r petic[i]oner hath beene a Souldier in Derby dureing the tyme of this late warre and hath faithfully served and donne his duty vpon all occasions In which tyme yo[u]r petic[i]oner was often imployed in goeing of messages from place to place when the Caveleers had divers Garisons in & adioyning to this County which yo[u]r peti[ione]r vndertooke many tymes in danger of his life and at last yo[u]r petic[ione]r was taken to Lichfeilde where he was kept in prison eight weekes weekes [sic.] which cost yo[u]r petic[icone]r all the money he and his wife could make shift of to keepe yo[u]r petic[ione]r from famishing while he continued there beside Twenty shillings which it cost yo[u]r petic[ione]r for his release which yo[u]r petic[ione]rs wife was forced to pawne her Cloathes for the obtaineing of the same.

yo[u]r petic[ione]r therefore prays that pr[e]misses considered this hono[ura]ble Com[m]ittee would be pleased to grant to yo[u]r petic[ione]r paym[en]t of the said sum[nm]e of xxx Twenty shillings xxx towards the maintenance of himselfe & poore children

And yo[u]r petic[ione]r shall pray.
