The petition of William Pulman of Alphington, Devon, 4 April 1676

To the right Wor[shipfu]ll S[i]r Thomas Carew, Kn[igh]t & the rest of his Maj[es]ties Justices of the peace now Assembled at this pr[e]sent Sessions of the peace for the County of Devon
The humble petic[i]on of William Pulman of Alphington in the County of Devon.

That yo[u]r pet[itione]r hath byn a faithfull Subiect & a Souldier in the service of our late Sov[er]aigne Lord King Charles the first, & therein was grievously wounded, yet being young & able to do something did apply himselfe to seeke a way of living as a foote post & never had above Twenty shillings a yeare as a penc[i]oner, & that but of late neither since Midsummer Sessions when he p[ro]ved his service & wounds by three severall witnesses.
But now so it is may it please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps that being now growen aged upwards of 60 yeares is become feeble & weake unable to travel or do as formerly to seeke his mayntaynance, his paines & aches of his wounds & griefes & great hardship in the warres (even from his tender age of 19 during the whole warr) now increasing much upon him.
Doth most humbly beseech yo[u]r wor[shi]pps to take the pr[e]misses into considerac[i]on, & of yo[u]r goodness clemency & compassion to augment his penc[i]on for his support & succor in this his aged & weake condic[i]on.
And yo[u]r pet[itione]r shall ever pray &c.
