The petition of William Greete of Barford St Martin, Wiltshire, Easter 1662

To the right wor[shipfu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace for this County of Wiltes[hire]
The humble petic[i]on of William Greete of Biford Barford St Martin w[i]thin the said County husbandman
<Humbly sheweth that>
Whereas yo[u]r pet[itione]r hath alwayes bin a true & faithfull subjecte to his Ma[jes]ty that nowe is & to his royall father & [illegible] Grandfather nowe w[i]th God, & hath served his said Ma[jes]tys said father in ye first expedition ag[ains]t the Scotts & since in diu[er]s places vnder the Com[m]aund of Collonell S[i]r George Vaughan vntill his Regim[en]t was dissolved w[i]th out the least adhereinge to, or complyinge w[i]th the adverse party, although he hath bin sithence much troubled & vexed by them And whereas yo[u]r pet[itione]r was maymed at Alsford fighte and receaved wounds in his Legge and Bellye
Nowe soe it is may it please yo[u]r worshipps that yo[u]r pet[itione]r is nowe growen poore & aged & is w[i]th all impotent & diseased by reason of hardshipps in his said late Ma[jes]ties service & is beinge vnable to worke & labor is he is likely to perish w[i]th out yo[u]r worshipps favo[u]r extended towards him
In tender considerac[i]on where of May it please yo[u]r worshipps to take such course by Order of Sessions for yo[u]r poore pet[itione]rs releife in his des decreppit old age as to yo[u]r worshipps wisdome shall meete [sic.]
And yo[u]r poore pet[itione]r (as in duty bound) shall for ever pray for yo[u]r worshipps hapinesse & p[ro]speritie
