The petition of William Bishopp of Chagford, Devon, 1681

To the Right Wo[rshi]ppfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace for this County of Devon, at the Castle of Exon
The humble Petic[i]on of William Bishopp of the p[ar]ish of Chagford.
Humbly sheweth
That yo[u]r peticon[e]r haueing bine a true and Loyall Subiect vnto o[u]r most gratious Sou[e]raigne Lord king Charles the first of glorious memory, and serued him faithfully dureing the time of the late vnhappy warrs, vnd[e]r the Command of the Wo[rshi]ppfull Bartholomew Gidley Esq[ui]r[e], who was then his Captaine, and haueing receiued seu[e]rall shotts and wounds in his Body in his said Ma[jes]ties service, By reason whereof he is not able to Labour as formerly, but is enforced to fly to this Wo[shi]ppfull Bench for Releife in that behalfe
May it please yo[u]r Wo[rshi]pps the pr[em]ises Considered, to vouchsafe yo[u]r wonted assistance in cases of this nature, and w[i]thall to afford yo[u]r Peticon[e]r such a Penc[i]on as yo[u]r graue wisdomes shall thincke most meete and Convenient, And yo[u]r peticon[e]r will euer pray &c.
