The petition of Walter Sturtup of Uscott, Wiltshire, 23 April 1661

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll the Justic[e]s of Peace at the gen[er]all quarter Sessions of the Peace holden at the Devizes Aprill 23th 1661.
The humble Petic[i]on of Walter Sturtup of Vscott in the Countie of Wiltes[hire]
Humbly sheweth, that whereas yo[u]r Pet[itione]r was a souldier in his late Ma[jes]t[y]s service, (as appeareth by a Certificate herevnto annexed) And was an attendant vnto his Ma[jes]t[y]s Com[m]issioners of Inquirie In w[hi]ch Imploym[en]t he had many tymes the Com[m]aund of a Party of horse, and was intrusted to receive divers somes of money for his Ma[jes]t[y]s vse, w[hi]ch he paid accordingly to those who had then power to receive it. And since the warres ended, was divers tymes sued, and made to pay p[ar]te of the moneyes soe collected, & to compound for other somes soe received, to the vtter vndoing of yo[u]r pet[itione]r & his family, he being now stricken in yeares, & having nothing left him for the support of himselfe his wife & children.
Yo[u]r Pet[itione]r humbly prayeth yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps to Com[m]iserate his lowe Condic[i]on, And to graunt him a Penc[i]on to be paid him out of his Ma[jes]t[y]s Treasury for the souldiery, such as yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps in yo[u]r wisedomes shall thinke fitt And yo[u]r Pet[itione]r shall ever pray for yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps health & happynesse &c
