The petition of Walter Huxham of Kingsbridge, Devon, 1680

To the Right Wor[shipfu]lls his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace of and for the said County att their gen[e]rall quarter Sessions Held att the Castle of Exon.
The Humble Petic[i]on of Walter Huxham of Kingsbridge in the said County Joyner
<Humbly Sheweth>
That whereas yo[u]r pet[itione]r in the late vnhappy warrs served his most sacred Ma[jes]tie Kinge Charles the first of blessed Memory As A foote Soldier vnder the Com[m]and of S[i]r Edmond Fortescue knight dec[ease]d Colonell of A Regiment of foote and of the p[er]ticuler Company of John Semaster Esq[ui]r[e] Levetenant Colynell to the said S[i]r Edmond Fortescue in diu[er]se places in this kingdome And Especially att the Seidge Against Lyme Regis in the [several illegible words] County of Dorsett in the yere of our Lord god 1644 where & in w[hi]ch seidge yo[u]r pet[itione]r Received A Muskett Shott in his right Thigh w[hi]ch ever since (and especially att sometymes) hath very much troubled & pained him that he hath not beene able to Labour to his trade but in A Weake manner to the great losse & hinderance of him his wiffe & Children But now soe itt is may itt please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps that yo[u]r pet[itione]r beinge old & fyndinge his old greiffe aforesaid very much to trouble him in this his old Age by such Contynually Akinge & smartinge that he is not able to worke in any manner to gett any Livelyhood for himselfe As he would willingly doe, must be in great Necessity & perish vnlesse yo[u]r wor[shi]pps Lawfull favour be vnto yo[u]r pet[itione]r in this behalfe Extended
In tender Considerac[i]on whereof And Forasmuch as yo[u]r pet[itione]r was soe wounded as aforesaid in the service of his said sacred Ma[jes]tie Kinge Charles the first And thereby beinge soe debelitated & weakened to gett his Liveinge in this his old Age May itt therefore please yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps to Comiserate his sadd Condic[i]on & be A meanes that hee may receive his now Ma[jes]t[y’]s most gratious penc[i]on As A Maimed soldier such as yo[u]r wor[shi]pps shall thinke fitt for his better Releiffe and Livelyhood in this his sadd Condic[i]on And yo[u]r pet[itione]r will ever pray &c
