The petition of Walter Chicke of Ottery St Mary, Devon, 10 July 1677

To the Hono[u]rable S[i]r Thomas Carew Kn[igh]t & the rest of his Maj[es]ties Justices of the peace of this County of Deuon now assembed att the Castle of Exon on the tenth day of July in the nine & twentyeth yeare of the Raigne of o[u]r Sou[er]aigne Lord Charles the Second ouer England &c King.
The humble peticion of Walter Chicke of Ott[e]ry St Mary in the County afores[ai]d Carpenter.
Humbly Sheweth
That yo[u]r peticion[e]r in the late unhappy warrs continued a souldier in his late Maj[es]ties Seruice of euer bleassed Memory und[e]r the Command of Captaine Thomas King belonging to the Regim[en]t of the Hono[u]rable S[i]r Richard Chaumley Kn[igh]t during which warrs & seruice he recieued seu[er]all wounds the markes whereof are yet uisible & yo[u]r peticion[e]r being now seuenty yeeres old, The effects of the s[ai]d Wounds together with his age rendres him altogether unable to support himselfe & to gett any subsistance & liuelyhood by his calling as form[e]rly
In tend[e]r Consideration whereof & for that yo[u]r peticion[e]r was eu[e]r a souldier for his s[ai]d late Martured Maj[es]tie & neu[e]r serued und[e]r the late Rebellious & usurped powers & hath hitherto Indeauo[ur]ed to keepe himselfe from the Charity both of the County & p[ar]ish most humbly now beseecheth yo[u]r hono[u]rs to commiserate his poor distressed Condition with some annuall reliefe & pension duringe the Small Remaind[e]r of his Aged & Impotent life & yo[u]r peticion[e]r as in duty bound shall eu[e]r pray.
