The petition of Trooper Robert Griffin, Nathaniel Rich’s Regiment, 16 November 1648

The humble petic[i]on of Robert Griffin
Sheweth
That yo[u]r pet[itione]r was att the beginning of theise troubles an apprentice in London, and for his good affecc[i]on to the Parliam[en]ts cause did about Sixe yeares since take vp Armes in their service in the Regiment of Colonell Barkley and hath euer since continued in their service in the said Regim[en]t and in the Horse Regim[en]t vnder the Com[m]and of Colonell Rich and during the said service did behaue himselfe with all forwardnes and faithfullnes to advance the said service being souldier in Capt[ain] Merrymans Troope
That yo[u]r pet[itione]r (the Nynth of Aprill last in the tumults of the Cittye lost one of his Armes in the said service not onely to the danger and hazard of his life but to the disabling of him from following his ymploym[en]t wherby to rayse a mayntenance and subsistence for himselfe.
That yo[u]r pet[itione]r hath seuerall sum[m]es of money due to him for the said service by the State As by seuerall debenters may appeare
Yo[u]r pet[itione]r therfore humbly beseecheth yo[u]r hono[u]rs to take his sad condic[i]on into yo[u]r Charitable considerac[i]ons that soe he may receiue his said arreares due to him from the State for his said services, that he maye therby provide a maintenance for himselfe who otherwise is like to perish in want and miserye.
