The petition of Trooper John Langleye, parliamentarian soldier, 16 March 1648

To the Right Hono[ura]ble the Com[m]ittie of Lo[r]ds & Com[m]ons for his Excellencye S[i]r Thomas Fairfax his Armye

The humble Petic[i]on of John Langleye late Troop[er] vnder his Ex[cellen]cies Com[m]and

Sheweth

That yo[u]r pet[itione]r hath not spared to sacrifice his dearest life, for the pr[e]servac[i]on of yo[u]r hono[u]rs, and publique good of the kingdome, haueinge bin seu[er]all tymes wounded and especial{ly} att the Battell att Nasbye, where hee was left for dead, and also receiued greate loss in that field, but by the p[ro]vidence of his p[ro]tectors after a longe Continuance, in greate misserye recou[er]ed but is therebye disabled and maimed forever. And hath nothinge to subsist on but 2 s. p[er] weeke his penc[i]on, which is not sufficient to relieue him, but hath bin enforced to sell and pawne all the litle he had for maynteinance, and his fath[e]r who was before of abillittie is nowe become verye pore haueinge beene Extraordinarilie by the enemie for his affection to the Parliam[en]t and for setteinge forth 2 sonnes with horse and Armes for the States service in which one lost his life, the other maimed wherebye he is vndone for ever himselfe Closelye impr[i]ssoned and aiudged to be drawne hanged & q[ua]rtered, in so much that yo[u]r pet[itione]r is in a deplorable Condic[i]on beinge daylye threatned to be areasted and Cast into pr[i]son for debt contracted in his weaknes, where he must vnavoydablye end his days vnlesse speedilye relieued there beinge due vnto yo[u]r Hono[u]rs pet[itione]r 24 li. as by the annexed Certificate appeareth.

Yo[u]r Pet[itione]r most humblye Implores, that yo[u]r Ho[nou]rs even for gods cause, wil be pleased to take into serious Considerac[i]on his misserable Condic[i]on and graunt him p[ar]te of his arreares, as aboue menc[i]oned, what in yo[u]r pious and Charitable dispositions shal be thought expedient, to pr[e]serve him from famishinge & to relieue him in this his greate necessittie, that he end not his days in prisson

And yo[u]r Pet[itione]r will Ever pray for yo[u]r ho[nou]rs eternall hapinesse
