The petition of Thomas Woods of Washington, Sussex, April 1678

To the worshippfull his Ma[jes]t[y’]s Justices of the peace for the County of Sussex.
The humble petic[i]on of Thomas Woods of Washington in ye County aforesaid sawyer
Sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]oner for divers years during the time of the late Rebellion did serve his late Ma[jes]tie King Charles the first of blessed memory as a Souldier in a troope of horse, under the Com[m]and of Major William Smyth in the Regiment of Colonell Henry Bishopp; As by a certificate subscribed doth appeare, In which said service yo[u]r petic[i]oner received severall wounds in his face and right legg, by reason of w[hi]ch wounds (as also by old age now comeing on) yo[u]r petic[i]oner (being above 57 years of age, and having nothing but his labor to subsist by) is unable to mayntayne himselfe, wife & family as formerly, but is likely to come to great want & misery
Yo[u]r petic[i]oner therefore humbly prayes that yo[u]r worshipps will be pleased to grant to him such a penc[i]on out of the publick stock for the releife of maymed souldiers, as yo[u]r worshipps shall think fitt And yo[u]r petic[i]oner shall dayly pray &c.
Wee whos names are subscribed do certify that the contents of the petic[i]on above menc[i]oned is true
