The petition of Thomas Straightbarrell of Stockport, Cheshire, Epiphany 1657

To the Hono[ura]ble the Justic[e]s of the Peace and Quor[um] for the said Countie:

The humble petic[i]on of Thomas Straightbarrell of Stockport in the said Countie husbandman:

Humblie Sheweth

That yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r was Borne and brought vpp in the Towne[shi]pp of Wayley in the said Countie and there liued for many yeares together And hath Menteyned himselfe & his wiefe since there marriage together through his great laboure and paines takeinge w[i]thout beinge Burthensome vnto any that hee hath beene a Souldier in the parliam[en]t Service ever since the beginninge of the Warrs & was att the Battle of the Citty Worcester [sic.] in the Regim[en]t of Col[onel] Henry Bradshawe: That about one yeare since yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r together w[i]th his said wiefe (of his owne Accord) Thinckinge to preferr himselfe came forth of the said Towne[shi]pp of Wayley vnto Stockport aforesaid where hee hath liued w[i]thout beinge Burthensome vnto any; And beinge nowe myndfull to returne againe vnto Wayley aforesaid (it beinge his cheifest place of aboad) beinge destitute of habitac[i]on:

Hee therefore humbly prayeth that pr[e]misses considered That yo[u]r hono[u]rs would grant vnto him the Ord[e]r of this Co[u]rt for the Erectinge of a Cottage in Wayley aforesaid for him & his wiefe to Inhabite in hee yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r First obteyneinge the Free consent & Lycense of the Cheife Lord of the Soyle soe to doe

And yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r will ever pray

<Wee whose names are herevnto Attested (being Inhab[itan]ts w[i]thin the Towne[shi]pp of Wayley doe beleeve the substance of this petic[i]on to bee true: & make Bould to Certifie the trueth thereof>
