The petition of Thomas Searle of Hemyock, Devon, 11 January 1648

To the Right Worshipfull his Maijestys Justices of the Peace of the County of Devon most humbly sheweth.
The humble petition of Thomas Searle of the p[ar]ishe of Hemiocke husbandman sonne in law unto Henry Wish of the same p[ar]ish and County of Devon as followeth
<May it please your Good Worships>
to take into Consideration the distressed estate of your poore petitioner Thomas Searle. Insomuch as he hath bene ever reall for the States Service ever since these unhappy differences, in which service he hath [?Receyved] cruell and maymed woundes First at Madbury under the Command of Henry Earle of Stanford and Secondly at Exeter under the same Command at which time he was taken prisoner not only wounded but being allso Barborously used whereby his former wounds Bracke out affresh and like to Roate and perysh in prison had not the Lord bene exceeding mercifull unto him and Thirdly at Hunington under the Command of Collonell Captaine Fry at which time likewise he endured much hardship before his Exchange, because he had nothing of his owne to Supply his wants and your poore peticioner did formerly apply his Calling w[i]th Carefulnes and diligence and now your distressed pet[it]ioner is like to Come to great penury without your Good Worships assistance.
Wee whose names are hereunder written doe Certify your Good Wor[shi]ps of the truth hereof desiring your worships to take in to Consideration the distressed Estate of your poore pet[it]ioner and wee shall ever remaine your humble Servants
