The petition of Thomas Row senior of Okehampton, Devon, 1699

To the Right wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County of Devon the humble petition of Thomas Row sen[ior] of Okehampton in the County afores[ai]d Cordwiner sheweth
That y[ou]r petitioner served his Late maj[es]tie King Charles the first as a foot Souldier for Severall years togeather vnder the Command of Captaine Bartholomew Gidley & of the Regiment of S[i]r Nicholas Slanning, which Service according to y[ou]r Petitioners allegiance & duty he cheerfully vnderwent all the hardshipps & damages that ye power & malice of the enimies of the Kingdome could expose him to, never any way deserted deserting the said service, & therein amongst many other hurts & hardshipps received one Shott in his left knee & one Cut in the Same knee at two severall times & was taken prisoner att Plymouth in the County afores[ai]d which Shotts Shot & Cut now in his old age are more painfull & Grevious then formerly, may it please y[ou]r Wor[shi]pps of y[ou]r wonted Clemency to grant y[ou]r petitioner a pention out of the County Stock & y[ou]r petitioner as in duty bound shall ever pray
We doe verily beleive this Petition to be true & doe certifie y[a]t the Petitioner is well knowne to vs to be of an honest & peaceable conversation & that we doe not expect that a gratuety out of the County Stock Shall be any ease to our Parish of Okehampton who have & still intend to p[ro]vide for the Petitioner but only for the Petitioners more Cheerfull Subsistance & an encouragement of Loyalty
