The petition of Thomas Manly of Exeter (St Leonard Parish), City and County of Exeter, 1687

To ye Wor[shi]p[fu]ll John Beare Esq[ui]r[e] & other his Majestyes Justices of the peace at the Castle of Exon
The humble Petic[i]on of Thomas Manly of the p[ar]ish of St Leonards in the County of Devon
Humbly Sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r as a faithfull & loyall servant & subject served his late Majesty King Charles the first of ever blessed memory in the late vnhappy Civill Warrs vnd[e]r ye Com[m]and of S[i]r James Smith in which yo[u]r peticioner was very much wounded and by reason thereof is now wholly incapacitated to worke & labour for his maintenance, as hee heartily wishes hee were able to doe (that yo[u]r peticon[e]r hath a stedfast purpose of Coninueing in a faithfull & loyall obedience to his now sacred Majesty King James the Second:
Yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r therefore prayes yo[u]r wor[shi]ps to grant him such yearely pension for his bett[e]r livelyhood and subsistance as to yo[u]r wor[shi]ps wonted Clemency shall seeme expedient
And yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r shall ever pray &c.
