The petition of Thomas Holland of Caldwell, Derbyshire, c. 1649

To the hono[ura]ble Justices of peace in sessions assembled
The humble petic[i]on of Thomas Holland of Caldwell pa[ri]sh in this Countie Laborer.
Sheweth
That yo[u]r petic[i]oner hath beene a souldier under ye com[m]and of Collonell Saunders, in w[hi]ch service yo[u]r petic[i]oner lost a Mare w[hi]ch he bought w[i]th him & all his Cloathes and money att the enemies takeinge of Burton upon Trent, where yo[u]r petic[i]oner was imprisoned.
Now may it please this hono[ura]ble Bench yo[u]r petic[i]oner humbly Certifies that he was placed by his late deseased Mother in a Cottage in Caldwell aforesaid where yo[u]r petic[i]oner was borne, but yo[u]r petic[i]oners older brother denyeth him a beinge there.
And therefore yo[u]r petic[i]oner humbly prayes this Hono[ura]ble Court will be pleased to grant an order that yo[u]r petic[i]oner w[i]th his wife and yonge Child may either have house-roome in the house w[i]th his brother or some other habitac[i]on p[ro]vided for him by the Overseer of the poore.
And yo[u]r petic[i]oner shall ever pray &c.
