The petition of Thomas Hamlyn of Ashburton, Devon, 9 July 1688

To the Honourable Bench att the next Generall Sessions of the Peace to be held att the Castle of Exon for the said County of Devon, your poore petitioner Thomas Hamlyn of Aishburton aforesaid humbly sheweth.
That whereas your said poore petitioner haveing served King Charles the first of blessed memory faithfully as a souldier in the late warr under the Command of Captaine John Brooking in the Regiment of Sir Thomas Hele Baronett since deceased for the space of Two yeares or more and received therein severall wounds in his body whereby he is disenabled to provide for himselfe or family as he ought, and alsoe is willing to doe if hee had strength and ability, wherefore your said poore peti[t]ioner humbly desireth and beseecheth your honours to take it into your most serious Considerations and to Extend your Charitable benevolence towards him, in Releiving him as your honours shall thinke fit in this his weake and poore Condition, And your said poore peti[t]ioner will have cause to blesse God for his mercy, and will be obliged ever to pray for your Honours welfare and prosperity in Releiving him in this his poore and miserable Condition, Aishburton afores[ai]d the nyneth day of July Annoq[ue] Dom[ini] 1688.
And alsoe your said poore petitioner hath Received and taken Releive of the overseers of the poore of the said Parish of Aishburton because of inability.
<I doe know the contents of this petition to be trewe & doe Humbly desire this Hon[oura]ble Bench to take itt in their serious Consideracion & afford him reliefe witness my hand.>
