To the Right Worshipful the Justices of the Peace of for the county of Hertford.
The humble petition of Thomas Cooper of Ashwell in the said county, labourer.
Whereas it pleased the late Queen Elizabeth of famous memory to order several pensions to be yearly paid for and towards the relief of poor maimed soldiers for this county of Hertford which yet remain due and payable accordingly, a pension of fifty-two shillings yearly was lately ordered by your Worships to be paid to one Christofer Eves of Ashwell (being a person lamed in the late State’s service), upon whose death that pension now ceases. Your petitioner for three years together in the late wars for the said State’s service was a soldier (as well by press as voluntary) and having had many wounds in the said service, is now made unable for hard labour by reason thereof. And having a wife and two small children to maintain and for the reasons aforesaid, he
does humbly beseech your Worships that the said pension of fifty-two shillings per annum lately conferred upon the said Christofer Eves, deceased, may be transferred and paid to your poor petitioner. And he with his wife and children shall daily pray for your Worships.
We, the inhabitants of the said parish of Ashwell whose names are subscribed, do humbly certify the contents of this petition to be true.
