The petition of Thomas Bruer of Chagford, Devon, 1683

To the Right wor[shi]p[fu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace for the county of Devon
The humble petition of Thomas Bruer of Chagford in this county sheweth
That y[ou]r pet[itioner] serued his late Ma[jes]tie King Charles the first of euer Blessed memory in all the late vnhappy warrs vnd[e]r the com[m]and of Capt[ain] Fulford and Capt[ain] Gidley in the office of a Sargeant in w[hi]ch time y[ou]r petition[e]r behaved himselfe as a valient soldier and loyall subject and rec[eive]d seu[er]all shotts and other wounds w[hi]ch are nott only very visible butt doe in a great measure disable y[ou]r pet[itioner] from getting his liuelihood by his labour and amongst many other hardshipps & sufferings w[hi]ch y[ou]r pet[itioner] often suffered in many yeares togeather y[ou]r pet[itione]r with many others was beseiged in pendenis Castle where the best food & ordinary diet was horse flesh w[hi]ch was deliu[er]ed in such smale quantities yt many died for want
wherefore y[ou]r pet[itione]r humbly prayes yt ye p[re]mises considered & y[ou]r pet[itione]r neu[er] deserting his Ma[jes]ties service yt this hon[ou]rable C[ou]rt would bee pleased to grant ye pens[i]on out of ye county stock & y[ou]r pet[itione]r shall eu[er] pray &c.
