The petition of Simon Ramsey of London (St Andrew Holborn Parish), Middlesex, 16 December 1672

The humble petic[i]on of Simon Ramsey of the p[ar]ish of St Andrew Holbourne London.
Shewing.
That yo[u]r pet[itione]r is a very poore man, aged 70ty yeares or thereabouts And his wife is aged 68 yeares, And hath laine a long tyme sicke. Yo[u]r pet[itione]r being by profession a Taylor, And att the begining of the wars, did forsake his habitac[i]on and family when hee lived very comfortabley, And went into the service of his late Ma[jes]tie King Charles of ever blessed memory, in w[hi]ch service hee continued, vntill such tyme, As hee was taken prisoner, by the Parliam[en]ts forces, And com[m]itted to the prison of the Gatehouse, where hee remained a long tyme, in a very sadd and languishing Condic[i]on, being when hee was taken, a q[ua]rter M[aste]r of horse, vnder the Comaund, of Leifetennant Coll[one]ll James Hambleton vnder the Comaund of the late Right Hono[ura]ble the Lord Crayford, in w[hi]ch service yo[u]r pet[itione]r did receave many wounds, And is now become very indigent, And by reason of his sight faileing of him, yo[u]r pet[itione]r cannot worke for that hee and his aged wife, are in a very languishing Condic[i]on, for want of releife, and like to p[er]ish, As by Certificate annexed appears.
His most humble suite and request, vnto yo[u]r Lor[dshi]pp is that you wil be pleased to take the pr[e]misses, and much wanting Condic[i]on of yo[u]r pet[itione]r into yo[u]r Charitable Considerac[i]on, And to graunt vnto him towards his releife and maintenance, a penc[i]on as is allowed to divers others that are and have bin in the Capacity and Condic[i]on of yo[u]r pet[itione]r.
And yo[u]r pet[itione]r As in duty bound shall ever pray &c:
Mr Daniell Man let the bearer hereof Simon Ramsey henceforward be a pentioner in the vacancy that now is December ye 16th 1672.
