The petition of Samuell Andrew of Gargrave, West Riding of Yorkshire, 15 September 1673

To the Right Wor[shi]pp[fu]le his Ma[jes]ties Justices of ye peace att ye private Sess[ions] of ye peace holden att Gisburne ye 15th day of Septemb[e]r An[n]o Dom[ini] 1673.
The Humble petic[i]on of Samuell Andrew of Gargreave.
Humbly sheweth.
That yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r was for A greate many of yeares A souldier in his Ma[jes]tie King Charles ye first’s service wherein hee first Lost ye use of one of his hands. Afterwards, hee still continueing in ye s[ai]d service had the second & worse misfortune to Loose the sight of both his eyes since w[hi]ch tyme hee hath beene relieved by ye s[ai]d towne of Gargreave w[i]thout any other allowance.
Now thus it is there was Lately one Christoph[e]r Snell of Skipton deceased wh{o} for ye Like service had an allowance of fiv{e} shillings p[e]r Qu[a]rt[e]r p[ai]d him as penc[i]on[e]r.
May it therefore please your good wor[shi]pps ye pr[e]misses cons{ider}ed to Ord[e]r yt hee ye s[ai]d Sam{uell} Andrew may be admitted into ye penc[i]on Roll instead of him ye s[ai]d Christoph[e]r Snell (and rec{eive} ye s[ai]d penc[i]on of five shillings p[er] Qu[a]rt[e]r as formerly it was payd {to} ye s[ai]d Christoph[e]r Snell and he in towards ye releife of ye s[ai]d Sam[uel] Andrew) for ye {illegible} the s[ai]d towne of Gargreave b{e} very hard charged by reason {of} having many poor w[i]thin them, and yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r as in duty bound {shall} ever pray &c.

<Ordered then, by us his Ma[jes]ties Justices of ye peace yt ye s[ai]d petic[i]on[e]r Samuell Andrew bee forthwith admitted by ye Treasurer for maimed souldi[e]rs into ye penc[i]on Roll instead of ye w[i]thin named Christoph[e]r Snell & to receive ye [illegible] su[m]me of five shilling’s Quarterly towards his pr[e]sent releife.
