The petition of Roger Walmesley of Fishwick, Lancashire, Midsummer 1667

To the right Wor[shi]pp[fu]ll his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace & Quorum for the County Palatyne of Lanc[aste]r

The humble petic[i]on of Roger Walmesley of Fishwicke in the County aforesaid husbandman

Humbly sheweth

That yo[u]r petic[i]oner in the beginning of theise late warrs was a listed Souldier vnd[e]r the Com[m]and of S[i]r Thomas Tyldesley and served his Ma[jes]tie of eu[er] blessed memory at Edgehill Brayneforth & severall other places And then A while after S[i]r Thomas hauing a new Com[m]ission to raise greater forces in this County Came downe forth of the South parts and seu[e]rall of his souldiers came a long w[i]th him of w[hi]ch yo[u]r petic[i]oner was one & coming into the Towne aforesaid only to see his Freinds, Not regarding yt yo[u]r petic[i]oner was a listed souldier and vnder the Com[m]and aforesaid, The Towne aforesaid did by Com[m]ission of Array imediatly after send forth again yo[u]r petic[i]oner to serve for the Towne And soe yo[u]r petic[i]oner remained in his late Ma[jes]tie service and his Ma[jes]tie yt now is three yeares w[i]thout any pay or helpe from the Towne aforeasaid And yo[u]r petic[i]oner receiving soe many greevous wounds & bruses in the service aforesaid w[h]ich hath no beene such a great decay vnto his body yt yo[u]r petic[i]oner hath not beene able to worke a daies worke this six yeares and for this yeare last past yo[u]r petic[i]oner hath beene in such extreame paine & misery yt he is not able to put his owne close on nor walke forth of dore w[i]thout helpe neith[e]r hath yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner any thing at all to releeve himselfe & his wife w[i]thall Therefore yo[u]r petic[i]oners wife about a yeare a goe when yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner was in great misery made complaint for drinke vnto the Ou[er]seer to quench the extream thirst of yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner had And the Ou[er]seer replied & sayd yt there is water enough in the Brooke And not long since complaineing alsoe for a litle foode to the Ou[er]seer the Ou[er]seer said again he yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner might goe & begg in seu[er]all Townes w[h]ich he named wheareas yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner is in such continuall pain & misery yt he is not able to walke one roode from his own doore And neith[e]r the Towne nor the Officers regard it

The pr[e]misses considered may it please yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps to take the Condic[i]on of yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner into yo[u]r serious considerac[i]on And to grant yo[u]r Order for settling a Competent manteynance vpon yo[u]r petic[i]oner for his releefe in the Townshippe aforesaid Asnd yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner as in duty bound will ever pray &c
