The petition of Richard Wills of Christow, Devon, 1683

To the wor[shi]p[fu]ll John Beare Esq[ui]r[e] and the rest of his Majestyes Justices of the peace at the Castle of Exon in full Sessions assembled
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Wills of Christow in the s[ai]d County hus[band]man
<Humbly Shewe>
That whereas yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r was a Souldier for his Late Majesty & was engaged in Severall fights on the behalfe of his said Majesty, wherein yo[u]r peticon[e]r received severall dangerous wounds & bruises, by meanes whereof yo[u]r poore peticon[e]rs old age, which is now crept vpon him, is not now able to worke labour & releeve himselve & his familye as he was wont & would willingly have done, had he abilityes as formerly
Yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r therefore pray yo[u]r worr[shi]ps to grant him such penc[i]on or releefe out of the County Stocke as yo[u]r Worr[shi]ps are wont to doe to other Maimed Souldiers in the like cases
And yo[u]r peticon[e]r shall ever pray for yo[u]r wo[rshi]ps long life and prosperity
