The petition of Richard Morgan of Audley, Staffordshire, Trinity 1663

To the Right Wor[sh]ipfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace for the County of Chester
The Humble petition of Richard Morgan of Audeley in the County of Stafford
In all humility sheweth
That your petitioner in the Raigne of his late Majestie of ever blessed memory kinge Charles the first was pressed for a souldier for the Towneshippe of Broxton in the said County of Chester and sent over into Ireland, where he continued for the space of one whole yeare or thereabouts in which said service he demayned himselfe truely loyall and faithfull to his said Ma[jes]tie and by reason of the greate and manifold hardshipps he then and there suffered he was brought into a very feeble and sad Condition, beinge for the space of three yeares together greivously afflicted with the Irish Ague which as yet he never throughly recovered; And albeit that many others who served in the same expedition for Ireland were furnished with money and Cloathes for the said service, and did after their returne backe receive yearely pentions from the place and parish for which the[y] served, yet your petition[e]r never received any reward or gratuity for his said service but cloathed and maintayned himselfe upon his owne propper chardges; Insoemuch that in regard of that inevitable calamity he then contracted upon himslefe and the greate losses and sufferings he thereby sustained he is reduced into an indigent condition haveinge had a greate chardge of Children to maintayne, and he and his wife (who now alsoe is very impotent) beinge betwixt them about seaven score yeares of age and unable to follow theire vocation as formerly, and thereupon is necessitated to petition for releife.
May it therefore please this Hon[oura]ble Bench (the loyall service and deepe sufferings of your poore aged petition[e]r duely considered) to take the pr[e]misses into your tender Considerations, and to order that he may have such Competent allowance forth of the said Townshipp of Broxton for his said service either by way of Pention or otherwise as to yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps shall seeme requisite; And your petition[e]r (as in duty bound) shall ever pray &c
We the Inhabitants of the parish of Audeley abovesaid whose names are subscribed beinge fully p[er]suaded of the trueth of the pr[e]misses, doe humbly recom[m]end the said petition[e]r to all those whom it may concerne & rest
