The petition of Richard Landon of Hereford (St John the Baptist Parish), Herefordshire, 1676

To the Right Wor[shi]ppfull Henry Caldicott Esq[ui]r[e] Major of the Citty of Herefford, & to others the wor[shi]ppfull Justices of peace, & Com[m]on Councell of the said Citty;
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Landon of the parish of S[ain]te John the Baptist a poore impotent man of the Age of Fowerscore and sixe years or thereabouts,
Most submissively imploreinge, The rather, in regard, And for that your poore aged petic[ione]r in the time of the Majrolty of John Powell late of this Citty gent[leman] deceas’d was imprest a Com[m]on souldier for his most gracious Ma[jes]ties Royall fathers seruice and amongst others, transmitted into the dominions of Ireland to fight against the Rebbells there being vnder the Com[m]aund of the late hono[u]rable Collon[e]ll Meend with his whole Regiment reduced backe to serue his Ma[jes]tie in this Realme, where at Ridmarly vpon seruice your poore aged petic[ione]r was shott, & maimed in his lefte Arme haueing vtterlie lost the right vse thereof ever since, haueing Liued neare sixty yeares within this Citty Apprenticed, & free of the trade of a smith paying rent for fifteene yeares past for a small Cottage to harbour in at the Burcotts Rowe within the said parish of S[ain]te John ye Baptist being now altogeather vnable to pay rent any longer being past worke, very feeble, weake, aged & maimed in his said Ma[jes]t[y]s seruice,
That your good wor[shi]pps will most favoureably be pleased to order your poore petic[ione]r some certaine weekely Allowance out of the said parish of S[ain]te John ye Baptist towards his relief in healpe to pay rent, what yo[u]r wor[shi]pps please, And he shall allwaies pray for yo[u]r wor[shi]ppes &c.
