The petition of Richard Jervis of Nantwich, Cheshire, Michaelmas 1677

To the Right worship[fu]ll S[i]r Thomas Manweringe Barron[e]t and S[i]r Robert Cotton Knight and baronet and to the rest of the Justices of the peace at this Quarter Sessions assembled
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Jervis of Namptwich aged sixtie yeares of there a bouts
Sheweth That yo[u]r petic[i]nor was a Souldier in his Majesties seruice at Edg Hill vnder the Commaund of the worship[fu]ll Major Richard Walthall and vnder him soe continued vntill Nasebies fight where yo[u]r petic[i]nor was taken prisnor and transported beyond sea, being sore wounded and brused in the said Seruice to the vtter vndoeing of yo[u]r poore petic[i]nor his wife and Children, whoe haue bin almost lost and famished in these hard and deare times for want of foode and nessaries to systayne nature.
The pr[e]misses tenderly considered yo[u]r petic[i]nor humbly besecheth yo[u]r good worshipps to graunt yo[u]r peticinor a larger pencion then now hee hath allowed him beinge but twentie shillings a yeare to wards the better mentaynance of yo[u]r petic[i]nor his wife & Children
And yo[u]r petic[i]nor shall as in dewtie euer pray for yo[u]r worshipp {illegible} and Safetie &c
