The petition of Richard Greepe of Chagford, Devon, 1686

To the Right Wo[shi]ppfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace att the Castle of Exon
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Greepe of the parish of Chagford in the Countie of Devon
Humbly
Sheweth that yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r haueing serued o[u]r Late Sou[e]raigne Kinge Charles the first of ever blessed and gloryous memory in the Late vnhappy Warrs first vnder the command of Captaine dangerfeild, And afterwards vnder the Com[m]ande of the Late Wo[rshi]ppfull Bartholomew Gidley Esq[ui]r[e] ag[ains]t the Towne of Plymouth, And in the Leagure against the Towne of Plymouth aforesaid att Ham[me] House by an accedent of fire where o[u]r late Ma[jes]ties Ammunicion Lay the said house was fired, and yo[u]r peticon[e]r receiued such hurt in the said fire in his eyes that his sight is almost gon, by meanes of w[hi]ch he is vnable to mainetaine himselfe by his industry and Labour
May it please yo[u]r Wo[rshi]pps the pr[e]misses into yo[u]r serious Considerac[i]ons to take and that yo[u]r graue Wisedomes would allow this poore peticon[e]r such an yearely penc[i]on as in yo[u]r Wisdomes you shall thincke fitt. And yo[u]r peticon[e]r will ever pray &c.
