The petition of Richard Drake of Whitchurch, Devon, 1675

To the Right Wor[shipfu]ll S[i]r Thomas Carew Kn[igh]t, & the rest of his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace At the generall quarter Sessions held for the County of Deuon, now Assembled
The humble petic[i]on of Richard Drake of the p[ar]ish of Whitechurch Laborer.
Sheweth
That wheras yo[u]r Petic[i]oner was a Souldier in the Seruice of his late Ma[jes]tie of Famous memory, and serued vnder the command of Captaine George Cutteford in S[i]r Nicholas Slaning’s Regement, in which Seruice he receiued seuerall wounds to his maiming, by which he is vtterly vnable to gett a livelyhood, but hath bin euer since maintained by his Father who had a considerable Estate, but his Father lately dying & the whole Estate therby faleing away, your Petic[i]oner is left vtterly destitute of maintynance; the trueth of the premises may appeare by a Certificate redy to be shewed vnder the hands and seales of the Justices of the peace att a priuie Sessions lately held at Taviestock
The petic[i]oner therfore humbly prayeth that in tender considerac[i]on of the premises, yo[u]r Wo[rshi]pps would be pleased to grant him a yearly pention for his subsistance out of the Treasury for maimed Souldiers, as his condic[i]on (in yo[u]r Wo[rshi]pps Charitabe Judgment) shall requir
And as in duty bound he shall euer pray &c.
