The petition of Richard Burges of Adlington, Cheshire, Easter 1679

To the hono[ura]ble his Ma[jes]ties Justices of Peace & Quo[rum] for the said countie

The humble Petic[i]on of Richard Burges of Adlington in the said countie husbandm[an]

<Humblie Sheweth:>

That the Petic[i]o[ne]r in the late Warr & tyme of Rebellion ag[ains]t the late King Charles the first of famous Memorie (within this Kingdome through his Royaltie and fidelity which hee then had & yett hath & heareth towards our now Sou[er]aigne Lord, the Kings Ma[jes]tie Inlisted himselfe a Sould[ie]r in his said Ma[jes]ties Service vnder the Comand of Capt[ain[ John Legh) [several illegible words] thereby not onely Exposinge himselfe & fortune to the hazard of warr but alsoe his wiefe and 7 Smale children to the Malice of Cursed and vntempered Enemyes:

That in the said Service hee behaued himselfe in Seuerall Battailes Manfully valiantly & couragiously ag[ains]t his Enemyes according to his place and trust according as a Sould[ie]r Ought to doe vnder Comand in his place as hee was from tyme to tyme appointed

The Premisses therefore considered and for that Henry Benett is now Dead: who was formerly Penc[i]o[ne]r from the Kinge: And that the petic[i]o[ne]r his wiefe & Children are now in a poore Condic[i]on & Estate because of all their Menteynance formerly the had gotten Taken from them by a new begotten Rule of Sequestrac[i]on for his faithfulnes as aforesaid it is therefore desired yo[u]r Hono[u]rs would pittie the petic[i]o[ne]rs Sad Condic[i]on and Allow him Admittance to bee penc[i]on[e]r in Roome of the said Bennett to receiue the Same yearely Allowance as the other did in Liefe tyme

And hee will Ever pray &c

Wee whose names are here vnd[e]r written doe verylie beleeue the substance of the aboue written petic[i]on to bee True. And therefore make Bould to desire that the prayer of the petic[i]o[ne]r may bee granted wee conceiueinge it to bee a very Charitable Deed to allowe the Same
