The petition of Phillipp George of Hereford, Herefordshire, Michaelmas 1675

To the Right wor[shi]ppfull Henry Caldicott Esq[ui]r[e] Major of the Citty of Hereff[ord], the wor[shi]pfull William Gregory Esq[ui]r[e] Deputy Steward of ye said Citty, & to the wor[shi]ppfull the Justices of peace, & Com[m]on Councell of ye said Citty;

The humble petic[i]on of Phillipp George of ye said Citty Cooper a poore aged impotent Freeman of ye Age of 76 yeares, & vpwardes,

Humbly supplicatinge, The rather, in respect, And for that yo[u]r poore suppliant in the tyme of ye hono[u]rable Collon[e]ll Birches invadinge this Citty was apprehended, taken, & deteined close prisoner in the Com[m]on Gaole of this County from before Christmas till Easter by power of souldiers, & officers in Armes of the said Coll[onel] for persisting faithfull in keepeinge & concealeinge ye secretts of this Citty, was evilly intreated, vnmercifully handled & burnt in both his hands, & leggs for not discloseing greate Concernes of this Citty. Whereby yo[u]r petic[ione]r hath since bin troubled with ye dead palsy much disabled thereby to worke for a Livelihood, & haueinge bin a Sergeant in Armes in defence of this Citty, when as the Scotts lay siege here, a faithfull soldier for his Ma[jes]t[y]s most royall father in Ireland, & also in thie Realme vpon perillous Adventures, being maimed, very aged, his sight faileinge him, & worke don fallen into a very lowe Condic[i]on of pouerty.

The pr[e]smisses most favoureably Considered, That yo[u]r good wor[shi]pps will most Charitably be pleased according to his Ma[jes]t[y]s most gracious Act for relief of faithfull indigent souldiers to give yo[u]r poore aged petic[ione]r pr[e]sent hopes of ye next Fall, or vacancy of one of ye Almeshouses of Prices, or Williames Hospitalls appurtenant to this Citty, And yo[u]r poore aged impotent petic[ione]r shall allwaies pray for yo[u]r wor[shi]pps &c

to have 3 li. out of Harp[er]s money
