The petition of Peter Salter of Ottery St Mary, Devon, 1684

To the wor[shi]p[fu]ll John Bear Esq[ui]r[e] and the rest of his Majestyes Justices of the peace at the Castle of Exon in full Sessions assembled
The humble Petic[i]on of Peter Salter of Ottery Saint Mary in the County of Devon husbandman
<Humbly Sheweth>
That whereas yo[u]r peticon[e]r was a Souldier for his most sacred Majesty in the late vnhappy warrs William Cogan being his captaine, vnder the comand of S[i]r John Ackland deceased his Collonell, and was therein most dreadfully and dangerously wounded & maimed, by meanes whereof your poore peticon[e]r is now become altogeather vnable to worke or labour for himselfe and family as hee heartily wisheth hee were now able to doe Yo[u]r poore petic[i]oner being now become a very decrepid and Infirme man
Your peticon[e]r therefore prayes yo[u]r Wor[shi]ps to comiserate the sad condic[i]on of yo[u]r poore peticon[e]r and to grant him such yeerly penc[i]on as to Wor[shi]ps wonted clemency in like cases and yo[u]r poore peticon[e]rs great necessity shall seeme most consonant
And yo[u]r peticon[e]r shall ever pray &c
