The petition of Peter Jones of Waverton, Cheshire, Easter 1670

To the R[igh]t Wor[shi]p[fu]ll Thomas Cholmondeley Esq[ui]r[e] and to all other his Ma[jes]t[y]s Justices of the Peace for the County Pall[atine] of Chester

The humble petic[i]on of Peter Jones a poore maymed soldier.

Sheweth

vnto yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps That yo[u]r pet[itione]r living in Waverton in the late times of Rebellion went from thence [illegible] voluntarily for a soldier (by the request of William Smyth sometimes Bailiffe to ye late R[igh]t Hon[oura]ble the L[or]d Viscount Cholmondeley) for his late Ma[jes]t[y]s service (of eu[e]r blessed memory) and actually served in his said Ma[jes]tie in Lieut[enant] Col[one]l Vane’s Company in Col[one]l Gibsons Regiment of Foot, and was at the siege at Namptw[i]ch & from thence to Yorke fight where yo[u]r pet[itione]r was dangerously wounded w[i]th a shott in his left shoulder, haueing had severall peeces of bones taken out, insoemuch that yo[u]r pet[itione]r is soe maymed & lame therew[i]th informeth yt he is not able to worke for his Liuelyhood, and the further he growes in yeares, the more his payne encreaseth, soe that yo[u]r pet[itione]r is reduced to great penury & want to maintaine wife and children vnlesse some p]ro]vision be made for his future reliefe,

That yo[u]r pet[itione]r further sheweth vnto yo[u]r wor[shi]pps that he was in ye yeare 1660 by S[i]r John Booth Kn[igh]t & Peter Dutton Esq[ui]r[e] two of his Ma[jes]t[y]s Justices of ye peace for ye County aboues[ai]d admitted one of his Ma[jes]t[y]s pentioners & was allowed 40 s. p[er] Ann[um] & did receiue 10 s. accordingly for the first quarter but afterwards he & many more were by ye late R[igh]t wor[shi]p[fu]ll S[i]r Richard Grosvenor Barronet putt out to yo[u]r pet[itione]rs vtter impou[er]ishment.

May it therefore please yo[u]r Wor[shi]pps to take ye pr[e]misses into yo[u]r iudicious and graue considerac[i]ons and yt yow wil be charitably pleased to readmitt him to be one of his Ma[jes]t[y]s pention[e]r[s] in ye of ye Hundred of Broxton, and to allow him the said penc[i]on as formerly,

And yo[u]r pet[itione]rs (as in duty bound) shall daily pray for yo[u]r [illegible] wor[shi]pps &c

We whose names are herevnto subscribed certify the Contents of this petic[i]on to be trueth, and we doe recom[m]end him vnto yo[u]r wor[shi]pps as a fitt object of his Ma[jes]t[y]s penc[i]on.
