The petition of Peter Bromiley alias Stones of Quarlton, Lancashire, 19 January 1654

<To the right wor[shi]p[fu]ll the Justic[e]s of peace & Quor[um] att there gen[e]rall Sessions of the peace holden att Manchester the 19th of January 1653>

The humble Petic[i]on of Peter Bromiley al[ia]s Stones of Quarnton in the parish of Boulton husb[and]man

Humblie complayneing Truly sheweth That whereas your Petic[i]oner being borne & brought vpp in Quarnton aforesaid an hamblett w[i]thin the Towneshippe of Edgworth in the said Parish of Boulton & hath continually lyved Lodged & Inhabited there vnlesse itt were for some short tyme whilst hee was a Souldier in the late Warres  in service of the Comonwealth Yett nowe that itt is your Petic[i]oner being now Married & haveing a Wife & a Child; The Inhabit[a]nts of the said Towne feareing your Pet[itione]r may hereafter become Chargeable or Burdensome haveing little or nothing but his handy Labor to mentayne himselfe & his Faimley withall (& w[i]thout any other Cause hitherto manifested) haue thrust your Petic[i]oner forth att doores and have refused & still doe refuse to allow him any house or place of habitac[i]on. And though Lawrence Rawstorne Esquire, one of the Justic[e]s of Peace of this County Imediatly before this Sessions writt to the Churchwardens & Overseers of the said Towne & desired them to provide an house of habitac[i]on for your Petic[i]oner according as they ought by Lawe or otherwise att this Sessions they would be compelled soe to doe. Yett notwithstanding Lawrence Horracks Churchwarden of the said Towne, vpon sight of the said Master Rawstones L[ett]re still threatned that they should have noe habitac[i]on in the Towne and thrust your Petic[i]oner & his wife (being great w[i]th Child & neare her tyme of deliverance) forth att doores att ten or eleven a Clocke in the night Being a snowe & a very cold season. Wherevpon your Petic[i]oners were in great danger to haue starved & but for some of your petic[i]oners wives Freinds in Tottington who pittyed their Condic[i]on & affoarded them lodgeing for a Few dayes vntill this Sessions They had indeed by all possibility ere now beene vtterly lost & starved.

In tender Considerac[i]on whereof and to the End that your Petic[i]oner his wife & Child may not p[er]ish for want of habitac[i]on May itt please your good worshipps to graunte & give Order to the Churchwardens & Overseers of Edgworth cu[m] Hambletts to provide a sufficient house of habitac[i]on in Quarnton aforesaid for your petic[i]oner his wife & Child And your Petic[i]oner as in all duty bounden will ever pray for your good {w}or{[ships]} in all happines long to continue.

<Richard Lowe of Halcomhey being a Neighbor to the aboues[ai]d p[ar]ties & present in Court will be ready to affirme the effect of this Petic[i]on to be true>
